  • CHRIS HEDGES. MAFIA STATE.

    February 18, 2025

    open.substack.com/pub/chrishedges/p/the-mafia-state

America is a full blown kleptocracy. The demolition of the social and political structure, begun long before Trump, makes a few very, very rich and immiserates everyone else. Mafia capitalism always leads to a mafia state. The two ruling parties gave us the first. Now we get the second. It is not only our wealth that is being taken from us, but our liberty.

Since the election of Donald Trump, Elon Musk, currently worth $394 billion, saw his wealth increase by $170 billion. Mark Zuckerberg, worth $254 billion, saw his net worth increase by nearly $41 billion.

Tidy sums for kneeling before Moloch.

At least 11 federal agencies that have been affected by the slash and burn campaign of the Trump administration have more than 32 continuing investigations, pending complaints or enforcement actions, into Musk’s six companies, according to a review by The New York Times.

The mafia state ignores legal constraints and regulations. It lacks external and internal control. It cannibalizes everything, including the ecosystem, until there is nothing left but a wasteland. It cannot distinguish between reality and illusion, which obscures and exacerbates gross incompetence. And then the hollowed-out edifice will collapse leaving in its wake a shell of a country with

nukes. The Roman and Sumerian empires fell this way. So did the Mayans and the sclerotic reign of the French monarch Louis XVI.

In the final stages of decay for all empires, the rulers, focused exclusively on personal enrichment, ensconced in their versions of Versailles or The Forbidden City, squeeze the last drops of profit from an increasingly oppressed and impoverished population and ravaged environment.

Unprecedented wealth is inseparable from unprecedented poverty.

‘ HERE, RIGHT MATTERS.” Alexander Vindman

    Wednesday 12 February 2025

    By Dr. Christina J. Johns

Well, I am livid.  Absolutely livid

Sitting at Publix, waiting for my drugs, I was scrolling through BlueSky and happened to see a post by Alexander Vindman.  Pete Hegsmith (OF ALL F…ING PEOPLE) had just announced in Brussels that the US did not think Ukraine belonged in NATO.  Hegseth lectured a meeting of Ukraine’s allies: “Returning to Ukraine’s pre- 2014 borders is an unrealistic objective.” Hegseth called the returning to pre-2014 borders, chasing an “illusionary goal.”  If Ukraine continued to try to recover its territory, it “will only prolong the war and cause more suffering. “  Then, to top it all off, Hegseth, pretending to be the sober, decent, competent human being he is not, said: “the United States does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement.”

It’s not that I didn’t think this was coming, but the arrogance of the pronouncement, the haughtiness, the sense of superiority, the imperiousness, just took my breath away.  This moron, casually, contemptuously betraying the people of Ukraine who have fought valiantly for three years for their chance at democracy.

The response of the Trump administration?  Too bad, you cost too much.  We’re out of here.  Oh, and you owe us (what Trump repeatedly called) “rare earth.”  What he is talking about are rare earth minerals in Ukraine that he wants to have sent to the United State as a payback for what a mafia boss president sees as “protection money.”  He has turned us into a cheap debt collector.

I am furious.  And hearing this news though Alexander Vindman is heartbreaking.

In 2019, when Vindman was putting on his uniform, preparing to testify against the president of the United States in what would turn out to be the first of two impeachment hearings, his father, Simon, was worried for him.  Simon Vindman moved his three little boys to the US in 1979, when Alexander was three.  They arrived with nothing as refugees from Ukraine.

Simon Vindman was worried that Alexander would not only ruin his career and his life but even risk losing his life.  Mr. Vindman was familiar with what happened to people in Ukraine while it was still part of the Soviet orbit,  who disagreed with those in power.

“Do not worry,” Vindman told his father.  “I will be fine for telling the truth.”  And, then, almost as a throwaway line, Alexander said: “Here, right matters.”

After Vindman testified against Donald Trump for attempting to extort Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by withholding government funding unless Zelensky created false and incriminating information about Joe Biden.  When he finished, he told them the story about reassuring his father.  Looking out at the members of Congress with confidence, Vindman finished with the sentence:  “Here right matters.”

The sentence stuck in my craw, as we say in the South.  It stuck tight, uncomfortable, unwelcome and sure to cause trouble.  I couldn’t get it out of my mind.  And then, Vindman wrote a book using ‘”Here, Right Matters” as his title.  So, I heard the statement – bald, confident, righteous – repeated over and over again.

    “Here, right matters.”

Every time I heard it, I felt a little nauseous, a little queasy with the nagging fear that no matter how much I wanted it to be true, it just wasn’t.  Not anymore.  Not since Donald Trump and the Republicans and the Religious Right had taken over.

“Here, right matters.”  It sounds so easy; sounds like the way I was raised; sounds like the way all the kids around me were raised.  It sounds like something I have believed without thinking very much about it practically all my life.  It sounds like something we have all believed and repeated.

I am 74 years old and cynical as they come. But, I wanted it to be true.  It hurt, hearing it.  It hurt because deep down inside me, I knew that it was like so many things the people in this country have repeated, nodded their heads, told their children and taken for granted.

But Alexander Vindman, a child clinging to his refugee father, penniless, being drawn forward toward the promise of this country, believed it.

Almost forty years later, he still believed it.  You could see it in his eyes.  You could see it on every inch of his face as he was testifying.  Andm he was not afraid.  He was proud; proud of himself, proud of the country; proud of saying it, proud he could say it.  He had his heart on his sleeve that day when he told that story in front of the men and women in Congress; men and women who had taken an oath to uphold the Constitution.

And because Alexander Vindman still believed in the honesty, the decency, the integrity, the incorruptibility of the country, I wanted to believe in it too.  I wanted to believe it for me, for you, for everybody, but I especially wanted to believe it for Alexander Vindman.

Here was this man who had traveled half way across the world when he was a child, carried along by the belief in a dream.  And you couldn’t come up with a better example of how that dream had at one time worked.  Vindman, his two brothers and his father had $200 when they landed in this country.

Vindman retired as an Army lieutenant colonel, Director of European Affairs for the United States National Security Council.  He had a Purple Heart, a Master’s Degree from Harvard, and a doctorate in international affairs.

I could not bear the thought of seeing Alexander Vindman’s trust and pride and conviction and faith in the country shattered when he learned that nah, right didn’t matter here.  Not anymore.  Right was a fool’s game.  There was no “city on the hill.”  There was no Marshall Plan to ensure economic recovery for war-torn Europe.  There was no USAID assistance anymore to help the people in Ukraine .  There was no more food, medicine, water, grain trailers, generators, or textbooks, to help the Ukrainians survive.

A friend of mine lives south of Kyiv, she makes handmade jewelry to support herself and her two children. They are bombed almost every night.  The other day she posted that her two children could now sleep through a night of bombing.

Would you want that for your children?  But she’s not us.  She’s not American.  Why help her?  Fuck her.  Who cares about her two children.  We need money at home.  Internet service is getting more and more expensive.   Gaming, the Daytona 500, getting your nails done, plastic surgery, designer clothes, guns, spa services.  People seem to think that now that we are not sending so much money to Ukraine, the government us going to cut them a check.  Sure, let’s yank that money right out of her Olga’s hands.  Bitch is not going to live off us while she’s trying to survive in the middle of a war.  Fuck her.

That’s what we have become.  That’s the tone used by the President of the United States and the slime he has surrounded himself with.  Fuck sending condoms to prevent an AIDS epidemic.  Fuck sending them and smirk about how funny it is.  Fuck funding people to dress themselves in hazmat suits and try to stop another Ebola outbreak.  It’ll never reach here.  Besides, we have other priorities.  We’re making money.  We’re buying bitcoin.  All the rest of you whiny bitches get out of the way, the United States of America doesn’t give a fuck about you unless you can make money.

Is that what you want this country to have become?  Is that the way you will tell your children about the country?  Not, we live in a country where truth matters, where compassion matters, where caring matters, where nobody is above the law, where cheating and lying are not honorable.  Where right matters?

Or, will you tell them, this is a country where we go out there and get what we want.  Lie, cheat, steal, humiliate, abuse if you have to but make money and laugh at the dumbasses you make it off.

I have found in 74 years that there are two types of people in the world.  Just two.  There are people who see vulnerability and rush to protect it and there are people who see vulnerability and can’t wait to take advantage of it.   The question is which one are you?  Which one do you want your children to be?  Which one do you want your country to be?

  • It Took Trump Only Twenty-four Days to Sell Out Ukraine | The New Yorker I am ashamed. Just ashamed.

    February 14, 2025

Susan B. Glasser on President Donald Trump’s ever-evolving alliance with Vladimir Putin, especially in Putin’s war against Ukraine.
    — Read on www.newyorker.com/news/letter-from-trumps-washington/it-took-trump-only-twenty-four-days-to-sell-out-ukraine

Has Vladimir Putin ever had a better few days in Washington? Donald Trump, just four weeks into his second term, has executed a breathtaking pivot toward Moscow, reversing course after years of ruptured relations between the U.S. and Russia that resulted from Putin’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. First, Trump signed off on gutting the U.S. Agency for International Development, delighting the Russian government, whose spokeswoman called it “a machine for interfering” in other countries’ affairs. Also on the chopping block may soon be Radio Free Europe, a Cold War legacy project whose coverage of Putin’s Russia has long infuriated the Kremlin. “Yes, shut them down,” Trump’s billionaire buddy and sometimes Putin interlocutor Elon Musk tweeted over the weekend.

Then, on Wednesday, the U.S. Senate voted to confirm the former Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Trump’s controversial nominee to become the director of National Intelligence. Gabbard has, like Trump himself, often amplified Russian talking points about the war in Ukraine—a key reason Mitch McConnell, the former Senate Republican leader, refused to vote for her. But he was the only holdout in a Senate Republican Conference that, as recently as Gabbard’s confirmation hearing last month, included a number of G.O.P. senators said to be queasy about her nomination. These were the stalwarts who once vowed to stand with Ukraine until it beat back Russia. Now they don’t even dare stand against a single Trump nominee.

That same day, Trump held his first formal phone call with Putin since returning to the White House. It could hardly have been more ominous for Ukraine—as clear a sign as possible that the American President who praised Russia’s war on its neighbor as an act of strategic “genius” now intends to force a ceasefire on Putin’s terms. The call, according to Trump’s report about it on his social-media feed, featured chummy references to the U.S. alliance with the Soviet Union during the Second World War and a decision to “immediately” launch peace talks. Only afterward did Trump call Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky. It was all too obvious which of the two combatants he favored.

  • LIFE AND NEWS NOTES FROM AN ELDERLY CHILDLESS CAT LADY IN THE BASEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF SNARK

    February 9, 2025

Immigration and Government as a Weapon

    Sunday 9 February 2025

    MSNBC

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION USING EXECUTIVE ORDERS AS WEAPONS

Lawyers working with Norm Eisen (as well as Andrew Weissmann and Mark Zaid) have had their security clearances revoked by Trump overnight.

(Note: The security clearances were also removed from Antony Blinken, Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, Jake Sullivan, and Lisa Monaco.)

The Eisen lawyers had won a substantial victory in court last week when DOGE and Musk were prevented from having access to Treasury information.

Simone (on Weekend) notes that in these cases the judges have been on the phone with federal workers at the agencies asking whether the DOGE people had been walked out of the building.  There is that level of supervision.  (Note: It is good that judges are doing this since one of the major problems now is who will enforce judicial orders.  Andrew Weissmann texted yesterday that he made the Trump people aware that they were obligated by law to show, in one case, the judge proof that they had complied.  Check this.)

Eisen also won in a suit demanding that DOJ not release the names of 6,000 FBI agents who worked on cases related to Jan. 6.

Eisen says that, according to the Post, Trump was stewing over the court decisions and came up with the security clearances as a way to get back.

Had the emergency order not gone into effect.  Trump, Musk nor DOGE can have access to payment information, tax returns, personal information.  One of the ways they could use this information is to target their business adversaries.

Michael Steele (Weekend) asks if we are facing lawsuit after lawsuit to try to contain the Trump Administration.  Eisen says that his lawsuits are part of an organized strategy to counter authoritarianism.

Eisen notes that Poland, Brazil, and the Czech Republic ousted autocratic machines.  We are going to have to do that.   We cannot go the way of Turkey or Hungary.

We are seeing peaceful protests for the first time.

    IMMIGRATION: FAMILY DETENTION

Reporting from NBC is that the administration is going ahead with plans to construct facilities to once again house families before deportation.  They have issued notifications to private prison companies that they are accepting bids to build facilities specifically for holding families.

Tom Homan, the “Border Czar,” remarked in an interview with 60 Minutes: You can keep from separating families by deporting them all together.

He’s talking about the American citizens going along with those who are not here legally. (Note: One of the ways the Trump Administration plans to get people out of the country without conflict is self-deportation.  Legal citizens decide to leave with their illegal families.)

    February 7, 2025

THURSDAY EVENING NEWS AND LIFE NOTES FROM AN ELDERLY CHILDLESS CAT LADY IN THE SUBBASEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF SNARK

    Thursday Evening 6 February 2025

    The Kyiv Independent (2/6/25)

    • A series of explosions rocked Kyiv late on February 6.
    • Zelensky says Trump has no official plan to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.

    MSNBC (2/6/25)

    • Sen. Blumenthal investigating Musk for conflict of interest.   Nicolle Wallace asked him what would be done if Muck was found guilty.  Blumenthal said it was a “BLAME AND SHAME OPERATION.”  Can you believe this?  Can you actually believe that Blumenthal said this?  That he thinks Musk or Trump have “shame?”  That people give a f..k?  They don’t.
    • Charlie Sykes says that in the Blumenthal discussion, the word “corruption” didn’t come up.  Trump has turned his administration over to unaccountable billionaires.  If the Democrats can’t figure out how to message that, they should get into another line of work.  (Note: That’s just the issue, Democrats are in the line of work of raising money, that’s it.)  The lack of push back against Musk is disturbing.
    • Nicollle Wallace: The question of whether a particular act is illegal has new meaning when you have no one at the DOJ (note: Well, Garland was no one.).
    • (Note: Look up state capture).
    • Cristi Goldberg: When the briefs were filed in the FBI listing case (demanding that the FBI produce names of agents who worked on the Trump case) nowhere in the government’s brief did it say that the administration would never release the names.  They just said that they wouldn’t do it immediately.  (Note: These lawyers just won’t see the reality of the fact that the judicial branch doesn’t work anymore either).
    • Angelo Carusone, Media Matters: Orban had to revise the Constitution six times in the beginning of his reign.  Their policies are unpopular.  They are “high on their own supply.”
    • (Note; Charlie Sykes is a generous and kind man.)
    • (Note: Story of Alan and the workers.)
    • Sykes: “Elon Musk has no idea what he is breaking.”  “Put a human face” on the repercussions of what they are doing.
    • (Note: They keep referring to all this activity as Trump motivated. Trump is an imbecile.  These are smart, ruthless, cruel, men behind Trump who have planned this out.)
    • Christi Greenberg: Pam Bondi to prosecutors: “You are the President’s lawyers.”  No, they are not.

Nicholas Kristof on AID, More Russian Abuses, More about the Trump State Capture

    Thursday 6 February 2025

People I wish could be prevented from ever working again:

    • The people who came up with the EMU commercials.

Well, this is one of those mornings where everything, and I mean everything hurts, muscles, joints, neck, everything.  The cats are still outside with Mike for their morning walk.

    News Notes (Moscow Times)

    • Slovakia is not receiving Russian gas via Turkey.
    • Well-known St. Petersburg musician falls to his death from a window of his 10th floor apartment during a police search prompted by his alleged donations to the Ukrainian military.
    • Ukrainian drone attack kills 3 in Russia’s Belgorod region.
    • Russia revokes press accreditations of a French newspaper.
    • A legally disabled Russian musician is sentenced to six years in prison for anti-war facebook posts.
    • Human rights groups have once again raised concerns over domestic abuse against women in the conservative North Caucasus republicans of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan.  Some women are returned to their families forcibly if they attempt to flee.
    • Moldova has begun supplying EU funded gas to Transnistria as part of an emergency aid package.

    CNN 2 PM

    • 2m federal workers face deadline tonight on trump “buyout.”
    • They are now attacking and threatening the Veterans.
    • Challenge to ending birthright citizenship.  A judge issued a preliminary injunction.  Pause action until the whole thing can go to trial.  The theory is that release would irreparably harm people.
    • FBI agents asking to block collecting and releasing names of agents who worked on anti-Trump cases.  5,000 agents.  Class action lawsuit.  Williams: Privacy matters and the names of these agents was released.  Employer is government and if they are being punished, it’s a First Amendment issue.
    • Elliott Williams, Former Federal Prosecutor: 1) Money for paying unemployed people has not been appropriated.
    • DOGE creepy kids given “read only” access.  Williams: The mere release of documents which are private is a problem.
    • Williams: “rescinded” the OMB memorandum.  Was the action rescinded?  People getting federal grants still don’t know whether they are getting their money.

    MSNBC

    • USAID, Pop-ups on devices have told federal workers that their devices may be monitored.  And, phones?
    • Farmers are paid for surplus crops that are send through AID. They will loose money.
    • “Trump believes DOGE is rooting out corruption.”
    • Nicolas Kristof: Column in NYT.  The richest man in the world is taking on the poorest people in the world.  “It’s killing children.”  Almost 100 people, employees of AID have died overseas in the line of duty.  Ebola was stopped in West AFrica on the ground (2014), by employees risking their lives.  There’s an Ebola outbreak now.  Because of Trump you don’t have AID employees trying to stop it from spreading.  “How often have Donald Trump and Elon Musk risked their lives in public service.”
    • Kristof: Avian Flu outbreak worldwide.  Because of AID bird flu has been interrupted in 49 countries.  Now this is not in place.  “It’s about our values and about our interests.”
    • Kristof: Kennedy proposed AID to save money, stop problems in the beginning rather than cleaning them up when they have gotten out of hand.  Mattis in his testimony before congress; “If you don’t invest in diplomacy you have to buy me more money.”
    • Kristof: Trump calls AID fighting for a “radical lunatic cause.”  Dying children?  Rape?  Blindness?  Rubio was a few years calling for more investment in AID to compete with China.
