  • Attack in Israel

    October 7, 2023

    Saturday 7 October 2023

    Morning News Notes

Israel declares war after Hamas attack

    • Leadership of Hamas is saying that after all the efforts over the past few years, nothing has made things better for the Palestinians.
    • There is discussion about what this war means for the efforts within Israel to stop an erosion of judicial power which provides some check on the right-wing government.
    • “This is not about Hamas,” says a spokesperson for Palestinian rights, Odeh (MSNBC)
    •  Ayman Mohyeldin: This situation has been boiling for fifty years.  It is a low level conflict that has been going on for fifty years.
    • There will be massive casualties from this exchange.
    •
    • Mollly Hunter (MSNBC):
    • This would have taken a lot of planning, and we don’t know what’s in store.  Hamas is getting all the players in Gaza together.  The occupation has not stopped.  Is this a new formula.
    • Armed raids are an experience that Palestinians know well.
    • The goal is to upset the Israeli peace of mind.  We didn’t hear from the government for a good while after the attack.  They took so long to respond.  “shocking”
    • Shattered the illusion that the occupation could continue to exist with only a low level of violence.
    •
    • Mohyeldin:
    • Israel’s technology was the deterrent.  Gaza has already been decimated and so a response by Israel is not as threatening.  They can’t get anything that could become weaponry (how did they attack).
    • This is a more sophisticated attack than ones launched in the past against Israel.  This was a surprise for the Israelis.  They are getting in military hardware.
    • You cannot ignore the Palestinians by making agreements with other countries, that is the message of Hamas.
    • Twitter Chatter:
    • This Hamas attack was generated by Russia operating in its own interest.

  • UKRAINE, RUSSIAN ATTACK

    October 6, 2023

    www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2023/10/05/groza-ukraine-russia-missile-attack-war/

    Excerpt

Lying on the ground in front of him were long rows of white plastic body bags, containing the 51 people who died when a Russian missile ploughed into Groza’s village cafe at Thursday lunchtime.

And in one of them was his wife Anna, his beloved partner of 38 years. Mr Chekalo had been drinking non-stop in the hours since her death – and said he could see no reason to ever stop again.

“I was working outside the village when I heard the explosion, and friends rang saying: ‘please come’,” he told The Telegraph. “I had a bad feeling on the way here, and when I arrived, I found my wife among the dead. What should I do now? Stand and scream? And what should I do for the future? Just get drunk every day?”

The missile attack was one of the deadliest to date in Ukraine’s 18-month long war, and left Groza – population 250 – mourning the loss of up to one in five of its residents.

  • ‘A Travesty’: Clarence Thomas Refuses to Recuse in Case That Could Benefit Billionaire Benefactor

    October 4, 2023

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas on Monday recused himself from a decision—but the rare move from the embattled right-winger came as he weighed in on another case involving his billionaire benefactor, which outraged one watchdog group.

The high court declined to hear Community Housing Improvement Program (CHIP) v. City of New York, New York, a landlord-backed constitutional challenge to the massive city’s longtime rent stabilization policies for about a million apartments.

“It is a travesty that Clarence Thomas failed to recuse himself in yet another case from which his right-wing donors could directly benefit,” said Revolving Door Project executive director Jeff Hauser in a statement. “Justice Thomas’ billionaire benefactor Harlan Crow has a vested interest in weakening rent control laws across the country to buttress his real estate empire’s profits.”
