Thursday Night Blog Notes

  • I can’t even keep up with the Trump scams surrounding this coronavirus crisis.
  • Brian Kemp, the governor of Georgia, is claiming that he just now learned that asymptomatic people could pass on the coronavirus to other people.
  • Every day there’s another presser with Trump congratulating corporate CEOs and touting meaningless statistics.
  • The Republicans are all over twitter congratulating private industry for “contributions” and “donations.” So, the people in this country who pay taxes, are reliant on donations, charity from big business to get them through a crisis.
  • This entire Trump/Repubican approach is designed to school people that the government cannot/will not help them if them are in need.
  • The Federal Government, however, under the Republicans will give $500 billion of public money to corporations.
  • According to Mehdi Hasan, South Korea and Japan’s unemployment rates are nothing like we are seeing in this country.
  • The Navy is expected to fire the captain who raised an alarm saying that his sailors had the Coronavirus.
  • The Nation is reporting that there is a Democratic primary in Wisconsin on Tuesday and Milwaukee is planning to decrease the polling places from 180 to 10. This is democracy?
  • Trump is complaining on Twitter that the hospitals and states have “insatiable appetites & are never satisfied (politics?)
  • I’ll never, never be able to wrap my mind around the fact that this miserable, moronic, corrupt, tasteless, bastard is president.

Burning Books: We Won’t Have To

Viktor Orban Meets With Angela Merkel In Berlin

My partner woke up in the middle of the night last night worrying about the Coronavirus.  He wasn’t worried about catching it, me catching it, or buying toilet paper.  He was worried about books.

“All the books are going to be online.”  He said to me this morning as we were lying in bed, propped up side-by-side, drinking coffee and watching the cats harass squirrels raiding the bird feeders attached to the windows.

“Before long books will all be digital and with one key stroke somebody like Trump can change them, change them just like that.”

“There won’t be any need to burn books anymore.”  I said.

“There won’t be any need to burn books.”

It’s not surprising that people like us are worrying about books during this Coronavirus crisis.  The Trump administration is quietly reaching out the evil fingers of authoritarianism all over the social order.  I can almost feel them burrowing their way underneath the covers of the bed every night.

In Hungary, Prime Minister Viktor Orban did not seize power.  The Hungarian Parliament handed it over to him by passing a new law that gives him broad powers supposedly to deal with the Coronavirus.  There is no end date set for these expanded powers and others are so concerned that they are calling for the EU to expel Hungary.

Orban, who has bragged about being the champion of “illiberal democracy” now has the power to jail people who publicize what are viewed as untrue or distorted facts which could alarm people.  No by-elections can be held as long as the law remains in force.  The government has the power to suspend laws.

The new rules can only be lifted with a two-thirds vote of the parliament AND A PRESIDENTIAL SIGNATURE.

Tell me that’s comforting.

Morning Notes: Yemen, Deaths, Procrastination

MORNING BLOG

  • This morning, there were 1600 dead. It’s 2:00 PM and there are 1800, almost 1900.
  • The NYT (3/28/20) is running a story about mismanagement of the crisis early on. Little attention was given in meetings in the White House with the subject of testing.
  • During this time, the U.S. “squandered” a month of precious time that could have been spent preparing for the crisis.
  • Had they tested, it might have been possible to quarantine hot spots and this might have confined the disease.
  • By the time testing was adopted on a wide scale, it was too late.
  • By mid-February, the U.S. was testing only 100 people per day.
  • Obama’s global health office had been disbanded a year earlier.
  • Testing is still being denied to those with milder symptoms.
  • NYT (3/28/20) . On Friday, the Trump administration cut tens of millions of dollars for health care programs and other aid to Yemen. This move will create major problems for programs run by the UN and private aid groups trying to supply hand soap and medicine and to staff clinics.

There’s No Country on Earth Like It

Mitch McConnell

I can’t see that there’s anything in this stimulus bill that prevents it being a slush fund give-away for big business.  Because of objections, there is now talk of an Inspector General and a panel to over see the distribution of the funds, but no assurance that these funds, for example, won’t to directly into the Trump properties and businesses.

This is outrageous.  What I am expecting is to see somebody like the snake-in-the-grass Chris Coons to come out with some kind of watered-down, meaningless “compromise” that will allow Republicans to steal billions.

I’m disgusted with the Democratic Party, as usual.

On top of everything else, why isn’t somebody from the Democratic Party, somebody who has some moral authority, somebody who is willing to fight for regular people, not out in public every day, explaining how this crisis is being used as a giant rip-off for the 1%?

This is a country that has degenerated into a situation where it is considered a serious proposal to allow poor, working class and elderly people to die in order to protect the stock market for the wealthy.

“Why do you care?” Trump and the Wonder Drugs.

kelly

Trump says: “What do we have to lose? I feel very good about it.”

This is just one of several statements Trump has made over the past few days, trying to convince the American people that he has some wonder drug that is going to combat the virus.

In one instance, he’s talking about using two drugs together to combat the corona virus, not approved by the FDA, that (when used together) have been linked with sudden death.

In another instance, he touted using two drugs that have been used for decades to treat malaria.  There is no scientific testing (as stated by Fauci) that supports their use with the Coronavirus.  And, these drugs are also used by people with lupus and chronic arthritis.  Because of Trump’s idiotic ranting about these drugs and implications that they are a wonder drug, there are already shortages for people who need these drugs for their own medical problems.

What do we have to lose?

But, when a reporter (Kelly O’Donnell) on Saturday during a PRESS CONFERENCE, pressed Trump and tried to get some answers from him, some facts, besides this “I feel good about it” crap, Trump responded by telling O’Donnell that she was “an adult” and to stop asking questions.

When O’Donnell explained to Trump that it was the job of the media to try to establish if what the Trump administration was telling people was true, she was criticized as being “hostile.”

Well, I want reporters who are “hostile,” who do their jobs and ask the tough questions to prevent unnecessary deaths sparked by a moron who doesn’t know anything about medicine.

After explaining my concerns to one woman who posted on Facebook, she responded: “Why do you care?”

Why do I care?  Why do I care?

Well, let’s see, because people could die because the moron in the White House is disseminating misinformation?  Is that maybe enough reason to care?

I guess not because according to the thinking of some people the truth isn’t important, reporters are “making themselves the story.”  We must listen to and believe every word of the King, bow down, and for God’s sake women can’t be “hostile,” by asking pointed questions.

This kind of thinking is one reason why we are in the situation we are in.

This is a cult and they are evidently willing to follow it to the death.  This is dangerous.

And, yes, I care.
