Invited by Campania region president, a close ally of Putin’s, Valery Gergiev, will perform at the Royal Palace of Caserta in July.  The 72-year-old conductor had been fired from venues across Europe for refusing to condemn the war against Ukraine.  Gergiev had appeared in Putin’s 2012 campaign ads.  He endorsed Crimea annexation.  He conducted in Syria after Russian forces helped Assad recapture the city of Palmyra in 2016.  Cultural Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano insisted “art must remain free.”
